K-12
Focus the Nation is a national educational initiative on global warming solutions for America that will culminate January 31st, 2008 in symposia held simultaneously at over a thousand colleges, universities, K-12 schools and other institutions. To get involved, follow these steps.

  1. Form a team. First, look to see WHO IS ALREADY INVOLVED on your campus. If there is no team in place, reach out to a few interested faculty, students staff and parents. You will be surprised how many colleagues from across the campus will be interested in supporting the effort. Once your steering committee is formed, SIGN UP to sponsor an event.

  2. Plan a Focus the Nation event for your campus. To get started, visit our ORGANIZERS HQ, and consult the MODEL HIGH SCHOOL AGENDA. Curricular ideas for elementary, middle, and high schools can be found at RESOURCES FOR EDUCATORS. A second terrific source of ideas is ClimateChangeEducation.org. Emphasize the interdisciplinary nature of the issue and involve colleagues from across the curriculum: art, religious studies, the natural sciences, communication, theater, political science and economics, foreign languages, psychology—all have a perspective to share. Devote an assembly to global warming solutions. Get the science and art departments to team up with a set of joint poster presentations. Invite a global warming speaker (link to the climate project) from your community. Be creative and ambitious!

Nationwide, Focus the Nation begins the evening of January 30th, with an interactive web-cast, the 2% SOLUTION. January 31st is the NATIONAL TEACH-IN. End your event with GREEN DEMOCRACY, engaging political leaders and other decision-makers in a non-partisan roundtable discussion with students. And support campus-wide participation in CHOOSE YOUR FUTURE, a nationwide vote on global warming solutions for America.

The simplest way to participate is to join with schools across the country in screening The 2% Solution, either live on the evening of the 30th, or during class time on the 31st. This interactive special will feature Stanford Professor Stephen Schneider, college and high school students, and global warming solutions experts Van Jones and Hunter Lovins, and will be available free of charge on Earth Day Network TV. The WEBCAST will be ideal for sparking small group discussion in classes across the curriculum.

  3. Reach out to the community. High school students especially should challenge other high schools to hold their own Focus the Nation events, and work with K-8 schools to get them engaged as well. Focus the Nation will only be successful if we truly involve the entire nation in this historic conversation about the future.

If you aren't part of an organizing team, you can still join the Focus the Nation effort. Sign up to Stay Informed.
