Obama Tells Students “Focus the Nation,” Arnold Endorses!

The two of us, Chungin and I, started Focus the Nation eighteen months ago, and today, Friday, we felt so honored and excited to join the national launch at Clemson University in South Carolina. There, Focus gained a strong endorsement from Senator Barak Obama Speaking at a rally in the afternoon, he told the crowd of several thousand: “This is important, I want everybody to pay attention here… Focus the Nation is going to have the largest campus teach-in in United States history [starting] right here on the Clemson Campus. This is an important issue, I want everybody to be involved with it, everybody to be paying attention, I hope all of you choose to participate because that’s a terrific issue and I want to acknowledge that.” Watch Obama on video.

Also on Friday we received this letter from Governor Schwarznegger: “I was excited to learn that hundreds of California colleges, universities, K-12 schools and organizations are participating in Focus the Nation… I want to thank all of the participants, supporters and organizers of Focus the Nation for creating this wonderful opportunity. I also applaud all the young people for getting involved, and I encourage each of you to continue to share what you learn with your friends, families and communities. Keep up the great work!” [more]

Edward Norton Joins The 2% Solution

Focus the Nation kicks off at 8 pm eastern, January 30th with our live webcast, The 2% Solution, and we are very excited that the actor and clean energy advocate Edward Norton will be joining us—along with Stanford climate scientist Stephen Schneider, green jobs pioneer Van Jones, and sustainability expert Hunter Lovins. Watch Norton’s compelling video supporting Focus the Nation!

It’s not too late to get your high school, community college, church, mosque, or synagogue to host a screening of The 2% Solution. All you need is an internet connection and a projector. In the remaining two weeks, help us sign up another 200 institutions! Also check out the Discussion Guide for The 2% Solution, which will give you some ideas for facilitating conversation following the show.

It’s also not too late to get your congressperson to attend your event via a SightSpeed video dialogue. Please keep pushing on this. Contact us if you need help making that happen!

One critical request from Focus the Nation HQ: organizers—PLEASE get hold of a dozen clip-boards, download our e-mail sign-up sheet, and make lots of copies. Then PLEASE circulate those sign-up sheets at every room where a Focus the Nation event is being held. Then send or fax us copies. We will add them to the national Focus list. Hundreds of thousands of students and citizens will be engaged on January 31st. Giving them all the chance to stay informed is critical to building the clean energy movement that can change the future. THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT PARTS of your Focus the Nation event.

Focus Time-Line:

January 21st: Voting on solutions begins at Choose Your Future
January 30th: 8 PM Eastern: The 2% Solution national webcast
January 31st: all day teach-in at colleges, universities, and K-12 schools
January 31st: afternoon: Green Democracy round-tables with elected officials
February 4th: Focus teams fax e-mail lists to HQ
February 12th: Voting on solutions closes at Choose Your Future
February 18th: Focus teams visit the local office of members of congress

We had 60 new sign-ups yesterday—now over 1450! Help us get 60 more today.

Thanks for the work you are doing.

Who is Coming to Focus the Nation?

Harry Reid, Hunter Lovins, Andy Revkin, Van Jones, Bill McKibben: along with hundreds of other politicians, climate experts, journalists and authors, they are all speaking at Focus the Nation on January 31st! Check out our “Updates” to see some of the national highlights—incredible events all across the country.

Good overview of Focus in Grist. Please pass the link along. Also—please comment on Grist, and tell the world what’s going on at your campus! The more comments posted to the article, the longer it stays on the home page. Help us spread the word that it’s not too late get your school, your kids school, or your church, mosque or synagogue engaged with the biggest teach-in in history—join over 10,000 volunteers building Focus events!

Start by showing The 2% Solution at your campus, faith organization, or even at a house party. Use the show to spark discussion, and then vote on-line for your top 5 solutions to global warming.

Most critically, deliver these results. At the screening, make a plan to visit your member of congress – every member of congress – with the Choose Your Future solutions. Set the date for Monday, February 18th, when he or she will be home for the President’s Day recess.

Most of us have never done this – gone to visit the home office of a congressperson or senator. But the time has come for each of us to make this journey. Contact Focus the Nation if you have any questions about how to set up a meeting in your community with your congressperson’s staff. [more]

VOTE for Real Solutions in Focus the Nation’s On-line Voting
Filed Under :  Build Focus

Our friends at 1-Sky have been helping us spread the word about Focus the Nation. Along with 1-Sky, Focus starts from a base in the IPCC science: to hold global warming to the low end, 3-4 degrees F, we will have to make cuts of 80% by 2050. The question is, how to get the country behind the specifics?

Step 1. Vote for real solutions in Focus the Nation’s on-line voting: Choose Your Future.

1.   Invest in the Clean Energy Revolution
2.   Create Green Jobs, Save Energy
3.   No New Coal Plants without “Capture and Sequestration”
4.   Cap Pollution & Cut Checks (to All Americans)
5.   Build Green: Carbon Neutral by 2030
6.   Jumpstart Low Polluting Biofuel
7.   Support Stronger Forests
8.   Tax Global Warming Pollution
9.   Cleaner Cars, California-Style
10. Get Efficient — Cut Energy, Save Money

Pick your top 5! Voting starts on January 21st , Martin Luther King Day and ends February 12th. If you support a coal moratorium, or green jobs, or a massive renewable investment program, then VOTE! And get your friends to vote.

Step 2. Deliver these results. At your Focus the Nation event, make a plan to visit your member of congress – every member of congress – with the Choose Your Future solutions.

Thanks to 1-Sky supporters helping build Focus the Nation: get started today with our QuickGuide.

There’s Still Time! Plus $50,000 for Youth Climate Leaders
Filed Under :  Build Focus

Thirty days left to Focus the Nation! Still time to engage another 500 schools. Thousands of high schools in the country have an Earth Club. It’s not too late to get them on board for a showing of The 2% Solution, on-line voting on global warming solutions, and critical engagement with political leaders.

PLEASE, pass this e-mail along to every high school teacher, student and principal that you know. Tell them to sign up. Don’t take no for an answer. Time is short.

Between 1960 and 1964, Americans moved from fatalistic acceptance of racial segregation to a solid determination to end Jim Crow. Between now and the end of 2008, we can move this country from a fatalistic acceptance of business-as-usual global warming. We can end the paralyzing sense that our children must accept from us an impoverished planet. We can embrace a determination to act, and hold global warming to the manageable low end.

Focus the Nation is now the biggest teach-in in history, with more than ten thousand volunteers building events at over 1200 schools, faith and civic organizations and businesses. In the next 30 days, help us bring hundreds of more schools and other institutions to Focus the Nation. Together, we can make 2008 the year that America woke up, the year that we faced up to this civilizational challenge. [more]

Humanity Needs Your Leadership

The USNSIDC monitors Arctic sea ice extent on a five-day mean. The 16 September 2007 record low falls below the previous minimum set on 20-21 September 2005, by an area roughly the size of Texas and California combined, or nearly five UKs.

Scientists announced last week that within five years, the Arctic might be ice-free – a strange new open ocean where bears and other beautiful creatures will no longer live. These are the effects of just over 1 degree F of warming, and we are facing three to ten times more than that within the lifetimes of today’s students.

In this time of desperate crisis, the world needs your leadership. Over the next few weeks, you can build the grassroots movement for sane policies that can stop the heating of this earth. We have the solutions to hold global warming to the low end, and create a safe and prosperous future.

Help us Focus the WHOLE Nation. Please reach out to everyone you know—at high schools and grade schools, churches, synagogues, mosques, rotary clubs, local businesses, book clubs, Sierra Club chapters, museums, bike clubs, environmental centers—and get them to commit to holding an educational event on January 31st. Do not take no for an answer. Time is too short. [more]

Have You Invited Congress? / Updates from America
Filed Under :  Build Focus

“Dear Congressperson: On January 31st, will you come to my campus and have a critical conversation about our future? Please talk with us about global warming solutions.”

That’s the letter your team needs to write before the break. Help us engage hundreds of members of congress with tens of thousands of young people in Green Democracy, a national conversation with the power to change the world.

If your U.S. Senators or Congresspeople can’t be there in person, that is no excuse. Focus the Nation is partnering with SightSpeed and working with Congress to set up video dialogues. Your elected rep can open up a lap-top in Washington D.C., and have a carbon-free, round-table discussion with your packed campus auditorium. Here’s how to make the invite. Learn more on our national organizing call, Weds 12/5 at noon eastern—call-in details below.

We are still sixty days out, and Focus the Nation is rocking across America. Highlights: [more]

Focus the Nation: 70 Days to Choose the Future
Filed Under :  Build Focus

“What we will do in the next two or three years will determine our future”. That was IPCC chairman Ramachandra Pachauri, speaking clearly this weekend about the critical times in which we are living. The panel issued a “last warning” to humanity, stating that we need to slow global warming pollution by 2015 to avert the worst consequences.

Please: Take one powerful action today. Reach out to a friend and ask them to join Focus the Nation. Don’t take no for an answer. Next January 31st, we must make history: engaging millions of Americans and moving this country beyond fatalism, to a determination to face up to the civilizational challenge of global warming.

As we travel across the country, we are asked again and again—is there a way for faith organizations to sign up? How about civic groups? K-12 schools? Businesses? The answer is yes! The simple way is to host a screening of the national webcast, The 2% Solution. Check out our Quick Guide to Focus the Nation to learn how to involve your institution. This is a moment when we all need to step up and become educators. Forward this guide to a friend.

Another common question: at colleges and universities, do you have to cancel classes to hold a teach-in? Absolutely not. We are not calling on Deans or Presidents to cancel classes. Instead, a team of students, faculty and staff can quickly build a day of events that parallels regular classes, yet also grows large enough to engage the whole school in a powerful discussion about global warming solutions. Take the next steps.

To learn more, join us for our regular organizing call on Wednesday, 9/21—12 noon, eastern. Call in to 1-218-339-7800, passcode 1312008. Thanks for the work you are doing.

Focus Passes the 1000 School Mark!

katelynTo The Greatest Generation,

Focus the Nation is changing history. Thank you. With your hard work, we have become the biggest national teach-in in US history. Still 90 days out, we have already blown by our goal of one thousand schools and other institutions signed on. Your leadership has created a powerful movement that is changing the direction of this country.

Make sure that the four components of Focus the Nation will succeed at your event:

THE NATIONAL TEACH-IN: On January 31st , thousands of students on every campus, millions of students nationwide, participate in workshops and panels, brainstorming global warming solutions. Are you with us? Are your faculty supporting you? Ask ten, twenty, fifty faculty to stand up as educators on behalf of your future. They will say yes. To make this happen, start with the MODEL TEACH-IN.

GREEN DEMOCRACY: Campus to Congress. Tell top decision-makers in this country about solutions. Invite every US senator and congressperson to engage in person. If they can’t be there physically, then they will face a student audience via a video-chat. Focus the Nation is working with leaders in the House of Representatives to make this happen, in conjunction with their efforts to green the congress. The face-to-face, intergenerational dialogue of Green Democracy will move America to confront this civilizational challenge.

CHOOSE YOUR FUTURE: Vote on the top five solutions to global warming. Proposed solutions range from a coal moratorium, to large scale renewables investment, to initiatives to strengthen forests for carbon storage. Choose the Future is the place for serious discussion about how to achieve what science and justice demand. The week leading up to January 31st, you vote, and your Focus team delivers the results to your congressional office. Every political leader in the country will hear your voice. Join the discussion today!

THE 2% SOLUTION: A national, interactive webcast, airing live the evening of January 30th, featuring Stanford climate scientist Stephen Schneider, sustainability expert Hunter Lovins, and green jobs pioneer Van Jones. Show the webcast to launch your teach-in. Screen it at your high school, faith group, civic organization, or at a house party. Our goal—10,000 screenings and a determination
TO STOP GLOBAL WARMING.

With these four components, together we will Focus the Nation. [more]
