Three winners will receive up to $10,000 to slingshot their ideas into reality. APPLY NOw! See official rules for application process. Some say potato…and some say Aardappel. We’re all a little different. That’s why we’re reaching out to each of you to see how you can best utilize your skills, talents and passion to make a difference. There will be one winner in each of three categories. How will you Focus the Nation? Outdoor Fanatics How will you protect the places you love to play? Artists How will you inspire your communities? Innovators How will you challenge our expectations? Clif Bar & Company is working to reduce their environmental impact in everything they do, from the field to the final product. Focus the Nation is dedicated to building a movement from the bottom up to create a national dialogue on Global Warming solutions. Together, we are collaborating on Project Slingshot so that now you have a chance to propel your ideas for Global Warming solutions forward. Selection of Grant Recipients: While we’re doing our part in this fight, we have some friends who are doing some pretty great things: Rocky Anderson, Billy Parish, Denis Hayes, Jeremy Jones, Eric Larsen and Judith Helfand (link to bios at bottom of page). They’ve kindly offered to help narrow down the submissions in their respective categories. Once they’ve narrowed the list to the strongest proposals meeting the application criteria in each application category, we’ll be bringing this back to you on April 1, 2008 –that’s right, all of you- to vote on the three projects you’d like to see become a reality. After all, one of our greatest civil rights is voting! Three (3) Grant Recipients (1 in each Application Category) will be determined based on a public vote on Finalists’ proposals via www.focusthenation.org/mojosligshot.php between April 1, 2008 and April 15, 2008. JUDGES Outdoor Fanatics Jeremy Jones: Pro snowboarder for over 15 years and is considered one of the best in the world. Snowboarder Magazine named him "Best Big Mountain Rider of the Year" for six years running. In 2007, Jeremy founded Protect Our Winters (POW), whose mission is to build a united front of winter sports enthusiasts in an effort to restore our winter climates. Eric Larsen: Modern day explorer who uses his expeditions to promote solutions to Global Warming. He is currently planning the Save the Poles Expedition, a journey to the summit of Mt. Everest, the North Pole and South Pole all in one year to tell the amazing story of these last great frozen places. Artists Judith Helfand: Often known for translating the cynical worlds of chemical exposure and heedless corporate behavior into highly personal, resonant, and entertaining films—including the Peabody Award-winning A Healthy Baby Girl and its Sundance Award winning 2 X Emmy nominated sequel, Blue Vinyl. With Daniel Gold she Co-directed and Co-produced EVERYTHING’S COOL, a toxic comedy about global warming messaging in a time of U.S. deceit, denial which had its world premiere at Sundance 2007 and will have its TV premiere on the Sundance Channel January 2008. An educator and activist she is co-founder of WORKING FILMS a national organization that is a dynamic bridge between high-profile non-fiction filmmaking and cutting edge social change organizing. Adam Gardner: Guitarist/vocalist for Guster and Co-Director and Founder of Reverb. REVERB is a non-profit organization which has "greened" over 50 major rock tours from Dave Matthews Band to Linkin Park educating and engaging musicians and their fans to promote environmental sustainability. Innovators Billy Parish: Co-founder and coordinator of the Energy Action Coalition and full-time organizer working to build the youth climate movement and advocating for solutions rooted in green job creation, environmental justice and healthy communities for the past four years. Denis Hayes: National coordinator of the first Earth Day, an event often credited with launching the modern American environmental movement, Denis is now president of the Bullitt Foundation and board chair of the International Earth Day Network as well as the immediate past chair of the Energy Foundation. Rocky Anderson: Mayor of Salt Lake City from 2000-2008, has been a foremost US leader in combating global warming. For his climate protection campaign, which achieved a reduction of 31% in greenhouse gas emissions from Salt Lake City municipal operations, he was honored with the World Leadership Award in London. He has presented on the science of climate change, the consequences, and solutions at side meetings of three United Nations Conferences on Climate Change (in New Delhi, Buenos Aires, and Bali) and at several conferences in the United States, Sweden, and Australia. Anderson originated the annual "Sundance Summit: A Mayor's Gathering on Climate Protection," received the EPA's Climate Protection Award, and was acknowledged by the Sierra Club with its Distinguished Service Award. He is a founder of High Road for Human Rights, a unique grass-roots organization bringing people throughout the United States together to effectively address major human rights challenges, including the prevention of catastrophic climate change.
